Tourism NT recently commissioned a tourism research Group at Charles Darwin University to help develop a vision and positioning for the industry in Katherine. It revealed that the primary motivator for people coming to the region was Nitmuluk National Park and its Gorge, fishing and indigenous cultural experiences.

Its position was also mentioned, being on the only road leading to and from Darwin and at the crossroads to the east and west. In the news article in the Katherine Times on 16^th July 2008 it is quoted as saying that The Nitmuluk Gorge was perceived as being a motivator for an initial visit to the region but people returned to the region because of other attractions available.
